I am beginning to understand that there is a very fine line between entertainment and distraction in life. One is an act of enjoyment or being amused for a time, or even a form of relaxation. The other is an escape from reality; a numbing.

When a person can’t find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure.
~ Viktor Frankl

That quote hit me all sorts of ways, especially since I would often find myself camped out on the couch all evening, finishing off a bottle of wine, bingeing the latest Netflix series, while also switching back and forth between playing Bedazzle Rhymes with Friends (or whatever it’s called) and Instagram and Facebook and maybe even Twitter for good measure … and then the next day feel the worse for the wear.

When feeling overwhelmed and anxious and STUCK in life, rather than deal with the pain/frustration/uncomfortableness of my situation, I turned into an escape artist and used (chronic) distractions to hide from reality.

How about you?

How have you been dealing with your time of STUCK? What distractions do you turn to time and time again? Do you escape reality or numb your feelings/emotions rather than face life, like me?

What if, at least for one night, you to put them all down? No phone. No tv. No computer. No social media. No drinking. Do drugs. No sugar. No … whatever your distraction is.

Imagine what your mind can conceive when not being consistently numbed/distracted.

Today’s Challenge

USE ZERO NUMBING MECHANISMS FOR ONE FULL DAY.

Sit quietly, read, journal, meditate, etc. whenever you have a free moment (such as when waiting in line or on the bus or when you get home from work). Notice what is possible when you have to face life without distractions.
